One house rule nobody forgets: before each stage show, every customer drops a pound in the jug. Browns has traded at 1 Hackney Road, where Shoreditch meets Bethnal Green, since 1982.

The formula is old-school. Entry is free all year bar a few days at Christmas, beer costs what it would in any Shoreditch pub, private dances are a flat £20, and around sixty dancers work rotating shifts from noon, with a stage show every ten to fifteen minutes. A mirrored bar, teal lounges, poles and VIP booths fill the room; Sky and BT Sport fill the screens. Over 21s only; clean trainers accepted.
