Phoenix Lane is the tell. California Club faces St Kilda Road, but regulars arrive by the side lane, park off the street and ring a bell at a secure door, out of view of the main road. Inside, the house spreads across 18 rooms: private suites, spa rooms, a timber-lined sauna and introduction lounges where the ladies come in one at a time while guests sit with a complimentary drink.
Walk-ins are welcome and reception talks first-timers through the process. The club has operated here for more than 30 years. Hours are 11am to 4am Sunday to Thursday and 11am to 6am on Friday and Saturday.
