Few London addresses announce their pedigree as quietly as Duke of York Street. The Gaslight of St James's keeps number four, a short stroll off Jermyn Street, and carries itself accordingly: a table-dance gentlemen's club that prefers velvet to neon.
Red curtains, striped banquettes, gilt mirrors and chandeliers above the bar set the tone; the evening turns on stage shows, personal dances and the dancers' company at one's table. Couples and mixed parties are welcome, groups may book an entry-and-bottle package, and the private or main room can be hired for up to a hundred guests.
Doors open Monday to Saturday from nine until four, last entry half past three; Sunday is a day of rest. Over-twenty-ones only, ID on request, and smart casual means no ripped denim, hats, trainers or shorts. Members enjoy private-event invitations and kinder bar prices.
